Waterproof or Not? How to Choose the Right Mattress Protector

Waterproof or not? Choosing your mattress protector

Two good protectors, two different jobs. Here is how to tell which one your bed actually needs.

A mattress is one of the most expensive things in your bedroom, and one of the hardest to clean. A protector is the simple layer that keeps it fresh. The real question is whether you need a waterproof mattress protector or a quilted one.

The answer depends on who sleeps in the bed and what tends to happen in it. A morning cup of tea, a toddler moving into a big bed or a dog who likes the duvet all point one way. A guest room that is used twice a year points another.

In short

  • Choose waterproof for children's beds, cots, pets on the bed, breakfast in bed, or anyone managing night-time accidents or night sweats.
  • Choose non-waterproof quilted if you mainly want a softer, cushioned surface and protection from everyday wear.
  • Whichever you pick, check your mattress depth first so the protector stays put.

Waterproof vs non-waterproof: the difference

A waterproof protector has a barrier layer underneath its top fabric that stops liquid soaking through to the mattress. A non-waterproof protector has no barrier: it shields the mattress from everyday wear, dust and the odd small splash, and often adds a little extra comfort on top.

When a waterproof protector is the right call

Recommended

Cots and cot beds

The Lullaby Trust advises a firm, flat mattress protected by a waterproof cover for babies. Make sure it fits tightly, and add nothing soft or padded on top.

Recommended

Children's beds

Moving from cot to big bed, potty training, or a poorly night: a waterproof layer turns a crisis into a quick wash.

Worth it

Pets on the bed

Muddy paws, the odd accident and general dog-ness stay on the protector, not in the mattress.

Worth it

Tea, toast and night sweats

If drinks come to bed, or you wake up warm and damp, a waterproof protector keeps moisture away from the mattress.

Our waterproof mattress protector pairs a soft bamboo-terry top with its waterproof layer, so you get the protection without sleeping on something that feels like plastic. It comes in every size from cot to super king, which makes it easy to kit out the whole house.

Who sleeps in the bed decides the protector.

When a quilted, non-waterproof protector makes more sense

Not every bed needs a waterproof barrier. If spills are rare and your main aims are comfort and keeping the mattress fresh, a quilted protector is a lovely choice.

  • A slightly softer bed. The quilted surface adds a layer of cushioning on top of the mattress.
  • Everyday protection. It takes the daily wear, dust and sweat that would otherwise reach the mattress.
  • Adult bedrooms with no pets. If the bed is just for sleeping, it is often all you need.

Our quilted mattress protector is made from 100% brushed microfibre, with deep pockets and wide elastic for a snug fit on deeper mattresses.

Our tip

Have both. Many households use waterproof protectors on the children's and pet-friendly beds, and a quilted one on the main bed. Keep a spare for each so there is always one on the bed while the other is in the wash.

How to choose the right size and fit

Measure the mattress depth

Measure from the bottom edge to the top, including any topper. Our guide to measuring your mattress walks you through it.

Match the bed size

UK sizes run single, small double, double, king and super king. Cot and cot bed mattresses need their own sizes.

Put the protector on first

It goes directly on the mattress, under the fitted sheet. Read how to use a mattress protector properly for more.

Wash it regularly

Follow the care label, and make sure it is completely dry before it goes back on the bed.

Questions we are often asked

Do I need a waterproof mattress protector?

If the bed is used by children, pets, or anyone who might spill drinks or have night-time accidents, yes. For an adult-only bed where spills are rare, a non-waterproof quilted protector is often enough.

Should a cot mattress have a waterproof cover?

Yes. The Lullaby Trust recommends a firm, flat mattress with a waterproof cover for babies, as it helps keep the mattress clean and dry.

What is the difference between waterproof and water-resistant?

A waterproof protector is designed to stop liquid passing through to the mattress. A water-resistant one may slow a small splash down but can let liquid through if it sits on the surface.

Does a mattress protector go under the fitted sheet?

Yes. The protector goes directly on the mattress, and the fitted sheet goes over the top.

Can I tumble dry a mattress protector?

Check the care label first. Where tumble drying is allowed, use a low heat, as high heat can damage a waterproof layer.
