The Sheet Story blog
Your autumn bedroom refresh
As the clocks change and the mornings turn colder, here's how to make your bed the warmest, calmest part of your day.
Summer bedding rarely survives the first proper cold snap. Thin cotton that felt fresh in July feels flat and chilly by October. A few small changes now will make the darker mornings a lot easier to face.
Swap to a heavier weave
Lightweight percale is brilliant for summer but it has nothing to hold heat in once the temperature drops. A slightly heavier, tightly woven cotton keeps warmth close without needing an extra blanket on top.
Layer, don't just add weight
One thick duvet can leave you either sweating or freezing depending on the night. A well-chosen sheet, a mid-weight duvet and a folded throw at the foot of the bed give you more control than one heavy layer alone.
Move towards deeper, warmer colours
Pale summer tones can start to feel cold once the light outside turns grey. Richer, warmer shades on your bed make the room feel more inviting the moment you walk in, even before you've touched the thermostat.
Check what's actually in your airing cupboard
Most people are sitting on sheets that are years past their best. If yours have gone thin, bobbled or grey at the edges, no amount of styling will make the bed feel new. Autumn is a natural point to be honest about what needs replacing.
