Stop Trusting Thread Count
A high number on the label feels like a promise. Most of the time it isn't one. Here's what to actually check before you buy sheets.
Once a sheet gets past around 400 threads per square inch, more thread count doesn't mean softer or better. It usually just means the manufacturer twisted thin, cheap threads together and counted each strand on its own to inflate the number.
So skip the number and look at these instead.
Check the fibre name
Long-staple cotton, Egyptian cotton, or a named linen source. If the label only shows a thread count and no fibre name, that's usually the tell.
Ask if it's single ply
Single ply threads last longer and feel smoother over time. Multi-ply is how brands quietly inflate the printed number.
Pick your weave on purpose
Percale is crisp and cool, closer to a hotel sheet. Sateen is smoother and a bit warmer, with a soft sheen. Pick based on how hot you sleep, not the label.
Wash before you judge
New sheets soften after a few washes. Don't write off a sheet after one night straight out of the packaging.
