How Often Should You Replace Your Pillows? The Fold Test and Other Signs

Quick question: how old are the pillows on your bed? If the honest answer is “I'm not sure”, you're in good company. Most of us are diligent about washing pillowcases but hang on to the pillows underneath for years. Yet your pillow supports your head and neck for around a third of your life, and it quietly collects sweat, skin cells and dust mites the whole time. Here's how to tell when it's time for a fresh start.

How long do pillows last?

As a general guide, most pillows need replacing every one to two years, although it depends on the filling and how well they're cared for:

Pillow filling Typical lifespan
Polyester / hollowfibre Around 12 to 18 months
Feather and down Around 2 to 3 years
Memory foam Around 2 to 3 years
Latex Around 3 to 4 years

Treat these as rough guides rather than hard rules. A pillow that still passes the tests below may have more life in it, and one that's causing neck ache needs to go whatever its age.

The fold test

This 30-second check works for polyester, feather and down pillows:

  1. Fold the pillow in half (for feather and down, place a shoe or a book on top).
  2. Let go.
  3. If it springs back to its original shape, it still has support. If it stays folded or flops open slowly, the filling has broken down and it's time for a new one.

Memory foam and latex don't fold in the same way, so for those, look for permanent dents, crumbling foam or a pillow that no longer keeps your head level.

Other signs it's time to replace your pillow

  • You wake with a stiff neck or shoulders that ease once you're up and moving
  • You find yourself folding or punching the pillow every night to get comfortable
  • Lumps, clumps or flat spots that don't shake out
  • Yellow stains that remain after washing, or a smell that lingers
  • Allergy symptoms such as a stuffy nose or sneezing that feel worse in bed
  • You sleep noticeably better on a hotel or guest pillow

Pillows and allergies

House dust mites live in bedding, mattresses and pillows, and it's proteins in their droppings that trigger allergy symptoms for many people. Allergy UK advises that washing bedding at 60°C or above kills mites. For people with a dust mite allergy, council environmental health advice suggests regularly washing pillows at 60°C or replacing them about every six months, and NHS allergy services recommend tested barrier covers for pillows, duvets and mattresses. Always check your pillow's care label before washing, as not every pillow can take a hot wash.

How to make your pillows last longer

  • Use a pillow protector under your pillowcase. It adds a washable barrier against sweat, skin oils and make-up.
  • Change pillowcases weekly, or more often if you're unwell, wear night creams or have allergies. Fresh pillowcases are one of the cheapest ways to make your whole bed feel new.
  • Wash pillows every few months if the care label allows. Most synthetic pillows are machine washable; feather and down usually need a gentler cycle or professional cleaning.
  • Dry them completely, especially in winter. A damp pillow put back on the bed can turn musty quickly. Tumble-drying on low with a couple of clean tennis balls helps fluff the filling back up, if the label allows.
  • Air them by the open window on a dry day, and plump them every morning.
  • Rotate between pillows if you have several, so one doesn't take all the wear.

Choosing the right pillowcase

Your pillowcase is the fabric your face touches all night, so it's worth choosing well. Ackly Bamboo pillowcases feel smooth and cool, which many people love for skin and hair, while Ella Cotton pillowcases offer a crisp, classic finish. Our guide to choosing the perfect pillowcase goes into more detail.

Don't forget the guest room

With Christmas visitors on the way, now is a good time to fold-test the spare-room pillows too. Guest pillows often get forgotten for years, and a fresh pair makes visitors feel instantly welcome.
